The Toronto Blue Jays host the Tampa Bay Rays in the final game of a three-game set after splitting the first two games. The first pitch is at 7 PM ET at the Roger’s Centre in Toronto.
The Tampa Bay Rays (35-18, 20-6 away) have been struggling a bit, but they got a much needed win last night. Down 5-3 in the ninth, the Rays drove home four runs. The Jays rallied in the bottom of the ninth scoring one before falling short 7 to 6.
The Rays status as top team in the majors is under threat after going just 4-6 in their last ten, so last night’s win was badly needed.
The play of the Toronto Blue Jays (31-23, 15-12 home) has been the biggest surprise in the bigs this year. They were pegged by many to finish at the bottom of the NL East, but instead they are in striking distance of the top spot and in the conversation for the Wild Card.
The Blue Jays success can be largely attributed to their hitting. They lead the majors in home runs by 20 with 89 homers total. Naturally, their slugging percentage is tops at .472 and only the Yankees have scored more runs.
Taking the mound for the Jays will be Shaun Marcum (5-1, 2.59 ERA). Marcum is on a four-game winning streak and is 5-0 in his last seven starts with a 1.76 ERA. In three career starts against the Rays, he is 1-0 with a 0.83 ERA.
David Price (7-2, 2.57 ERA) gets the start for Tampa Bay. In four career starts against the Blue Jays, Price is 3-0 with a 2.92 ERA. His last start was a three-run seven inning performance, that ended in a 4-2 loss to Chicago last Friday. Prior to that loss, he had a four-game winning streak.
