The Boston Red Sox host the Cleveland Indians in the final game of a four-game series tonight ahead of a big weekend series with the Yankees.
Trailing the Yankees and Rays by 6.5 games, the Boston Red Sox (61-47, 33-23 home) are in need of some wins in the ferocious AL East. Starting with the Yankees, the Red Sox play the next three series on the road, so a win tonight is important with some challenges ahead.
The Cleveland Indians (46-62, 23-35 away) have already guaranteed themselves the series split with a 9-1 win over last night to take two out of the first three games. The win was also the fourth in five games for the tribe.
Andy Marte had a three-run homer while Jayson Nix had a a tow- run bomb. David Ortiz had the lone reply for the Red Sox with a solo-shot.
Getting the start for the Red Sox will be Daisuke Matsuzaka (7-3, 4.22 ERA). The righty has dominated the Indians recently going 3-0 in three starts with a 0.86 ERA.
The Indians counter with Josh Tomlin (1-0, 1.46 ERA). Tomlin’s debut, and first win, at the majors came on July 27 against the Yankees. The right-hander is coming off of a 5 1/3 innings performance against Toronto where he gave up one run on four hits in a 2-1 victory.
